Styling your sofa like a pro

Your sofa is the most used piece of furniture within your living room - it's where we collapse in an undignified heap after a long day after work, settle down on for a movie marathon with loved ones and offers comfy seating for friends and family when they come to visit. It is also one of the largest pieces of furniture in the room so it pays to make it look it's best by styling it and turning it into a striking design feature all of it's own. Want to know how? Just read on.....

The easiest and best way to dress your sofa is to add cushions - not only are they good for giving you extra back support they instantly add interest, texture and style. Use cushions that compliment each other or if you have a sofa in a solid colour don't be afraid to mix patterns to make a dramatic statement. Simply update the look of your sofa during the year by changing your cushion covers to suit the seasons, for example browns and gold for autumn, pastel shades for spring etc.

Add a throw to the back of your sofa, this again adds texture and softens the look of it - also on chilly evenings it means you have something warm to snuggle down with. If you use a throw that is highly patterned then compliment it with the use of plain cushions.

Try using a standard lamp to 'frame' your sofa by placing one next to it - this adds visual height to your sofa and also adds extra lighting for hobbies like reading. Make sure that your lampshade either matches or compliments your cushions and/or throw.

The space above the sofa is an ideal place to hang prints and art work that tie into the overall scheme of the room. Try grouping into odd numbers to add visual interest or a symmetrical arrangement to achieve balance.

Dress your coffee table by adding vases and/or decorative pieces in colours that compliment the cushions and fabric of your sofa, thus making the entire seating area a focal point of interest within the room.
