Spring and summer trends for 2018

As I write this blog post, the 'beast from the east' and Storm Emma is battering the UK with snow, ice and freezing gale force winds. Here in usually sunny Broadstairs we haven't escaped it's clutches and the constant snow is beginning to get a bit tiresome. Despite the wintery weather which is keeping us huddled up indoors, spring is on it's way (yes honestly, it's coming) so what better time to cheer ourselves up by thinking of the bright colours and wonderful textures that are hitting the interior design scene this spring/summer...............

Geometric patterns: Although seen in 2017, geometric patterns were mainly used on rugs and cushions - this year is about adding texture to your home with patterns in the form of wallpaper, art work and wall tiles.

Embellishments: tassels, tufting, fringing and other forms of embellishment are big this season and will be found on throws, cushions, wall hangings and accessories. This adds a homemade look to a room and a feeling of individuality. If you are interested in craft work why not try updating your own cushions and throws with embellishments; it will give your piece a new lease of life and also makes it unique.

Pastel colours: said to be a massive trend this year not only within the interiors world but in fashion as well are pastel colours; soft mint tones, duck egg blue, powdery pinks and lavender are an example of some of the beautiful shades that will give your home a fresh airy feel this spring.

Inky Blues: another colour trend for this year is Inky Blues. Instead of decorating a whole expanse in theses shades you can bring blue into your room with the use of accessories. Add flowers, like pale blue Hydrangeas in coloured glass and stoneware vases in varying shades and heights to make an attractive display.

Ombre: this is going to be used in many different ways this season, from rugs to cushions, bedding and fabrics. Meaning literally 'to shade', when used on items such as furniture, artwork and lampshades it is more likely to have a watercolour style to it. Although it looks fantastic on walls using paints, if you are a little nervous of achieving this blended colour effect correctly use wallpaper instead. Once the walls are done co-ordinate your room by adding accessories that compliment it.

Gold: last year the trend for metallic was mainly used as paint finishes; this years key colour of Gold will be found on picture frames, door knobs and handles, lamp bases and other home accessories. Gold adds a real touch of elegance to a room and is much warmer than say Silver which can sometimes give a room a cold feel.

Try implementing some of these trends into your home and enjoy experimenting with the different looks you create; as always don't forget to share what you have achieved by commenting below. Keep warm and safe during this period of severe weather, don't know about you but I'm off to defrost myself in front of the fire with a hot chocolate! All being well the next time I post here on Blogger the sun will be shining and the sky will be blue, I'm suffering from cabin fever and starting to forget that I actually live by the seaside. Take care all!!
